Alister Buckley

Alister Buckley grew up in Fitzroy, Melbourne, surrounded by buildings in various states of becoming something else. His parents worked in property development, and when they took over a building with a hostel inside it, Alister discovered that the most interesting thing about a place was often what happened between the people staying there. He learned the business from close range: the early arrivals, the late-night questions at reception, the work behind a welcoming common room, and the way an ordinary evening could become the story guests told long after they went home. Later, his travels took him through hostels around the world. He noticed how differently each one brought people together, and how much of that character was missing from the polished images used to promote them. Photography became his way of paying attention. Alister has worked across sport, travel, nature, architecture, and hospitality, developing an eye for movement, atmosphere, and the details that make a setting feel lived in. He now works with creative agencies across Oceania, while his work with hostels keeps him connected to the industry that gave him some of his best memories. At HostelTrends, Alister works with the editor after an article is written to find its visual story. He plans and produces lead photographs, selects and edits images, and creates supporting graphics when they help readers understand an idea. He looks for credible moments: a guest settling into a dorm, staff preparing for an arrival, strangers finding common ground in a kitchen. His aim is to show what an experience actually feels like, with accurate captions, credits, permissions, and a clear record of how each image was made. Away from a shoot, Alister is usually exploring a neighbourhood with his camera or finding somewhere to watch Aussie rules football.
